High Stakes is the first game that I ever released. I designed and developed it all on my own. This was done for a collaboration between the college I studied at and the local SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) primary school. The game was designed for the students of the primary school to be able to play it whenever they would want to.
We were given 3 different genres and a couple of different themes by the commission, and out of them I chose to make a survival game with the theme of history. We also got given some ideas of things the target audience of the game wanted and what other games they liked.
With this I decided that a small roguelike game, with simple controls would be the best for me to make for this. I planned for the game to be designed around a casino with the progression be based around cards. And also having most of the enemies be vaguely based around mythological creatures.
The roguelike would also have had shorter runs, due to the game being made to be played in small amounts at a time.
Overall the development of the game went smoothly, it had a bit of a rocky start though, with some of my code not working as intended, however, throughout the development it was fixed and I learned a lot while making it.
All of the ideas stayed the same as they did when I first came up with the plans for the game, with the cards being the way to progress and win the game. However, due my skill at game development at the time, the quality of the implementation of these ideas were not to the standards I would hold myself to today.
I worked on this game for around 4 months, and made consistent progress throughout it's development time.
You can see more of how the game got developed on the earlier videos on my YouTube channel.
